Is a wedding in Thailand the right choice for you?
Three things make it different from a destination wedding within India:
- Visa-free entry. Indian passport holders can stay up to 30 days visa-free for tourism, a real advantage when a guest list runs into the hundreds.
- Flight connectivity. Direct routes from most major Indian cities reach Bangkok and Phuket.
- Multi-function resorts. Thailand’s resorts are built for multi-day, multi-function hospitality in a way many single-function Indian venues aren’t.
What it doesn’t automatically solve is cost, and we’re deliberately not handing you a number. Published estimates for “a wedding in Thailand” vary by several multiples from article to article, because almost none come from real bookings. We’d rather you get an actual quote against your real guest list and date than trust another unverified figure.

What can go wrong when planning a Thailand wedding?
Almost no Thailand wedding falls apart because the beach wasn’t pretty enough. It’s almost always one of these five.
1. Budget confusion. Not because Thailand is expensive, but because nobody sets category expectations before touring venues. Every option then looks either shockingly cheap or shockingly dear.
2. Venue-to-ritual mismatch. A gorgeous resort doesn’t automatically have fire permission for a mandap, room for a baraat entry, or a stage for a 150-person sangeet.
3. Guest travel at scale. Every guest must file their own arrival card individually, not as a group. Most couples assume “someone else” is handling it.

5. Vendor fit. Excellent Thai vendors aren’t automatically experienced with a four-day Indian wedding: a baraat, a dhol player, a pandit for the havan, a buffet that stays properly vegetarian.
How do you choose the right wedding venue in Thailand?
Let guest count filter your shortlist before looks do. A 300-person baraat and a 60-guest ceremony need fundamentally different properties. Touring venues before you settle a realistic guest number usually means falling for something that doesn’t fit.
Once you have a number, check three things:
- Rooms: about one room per two guests, so 200 guests need roughly 100 rooms.
- Separate spaces: a different setting for mehendi, haldi, sangeet and pheras.
- Rain backup: an indoor space big enough for every outdoor event.

Why we don’t give a fixed wedding cost
A “typical” cost doesn’t exist. Generic online estimates disagree by several multiples for what’s supposedly the same wedding, because almost none come from real bookings.
Budget categories to fix before you tour venues
Decide these up front, so every quote you receive can be measured against the same list rather than judged in isolation:
- Venue and function spaces
- Guest accommodation
- Catering and bar
- Décor
- Photography and entertainment
- Guest transport

What do wedding guests need to know about visas and travel?
- Visa: since 15 September 2026, Indian passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism. Visa on Arrival is no longer offered to Indians. Read the full details in our guide to the Thailand visa for Indians.
- Arrival card: every traveller files a free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before arrival. There’s no group or family filing, so a 100-guest wedding means 100 separate filings.
- Passports: each guest needs a passport valid for at least six months.
- Flights: direct connections from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad reach Bangkok and Phuket. Krabi, Koh Samui and Hua Hin usually need a domestic connection or a drive from Bangkok.
- Coordination tip: build travel-document reminders into your guest communication, at 60 days, 14 days and 72 hours before travel. Don’t assume everyone will handle it themselves.
How do you choose wedding vendors in Thailand?
A resort’s in-house team can run a Western-style wedding without much guidance. A four-function Indian wedding needs a coordination layer that understands both the rituals and how a specific Thai property operates. That means knowing whether the fire code allows a havan, how late outdoor music can run, and whether the kitchen can handle a large vegetarian buffet without cross-contamination.
Decorators: look for one who has actually built a mandap, not just a Western floral arch.
Caterers: confirm they can run a proper Indian buffet or plated service at scale, not a scaled-down version of a Thai wedding menu.
Photographers: look for someone who knows the sequence of Indian rituals well enough not to miss the moments that matter. Phuket in particular has many photographers with real Indian wedding portfolios, so ask to see them.
Entertainment: check that the DJ and sound team can handle a full sangeet, and confirm music cut-off times with the venue.
What should you ask every wedding venue before booking?
These are the questions that catch most couples out, in one place:

Hua Hin: SO/ Sofitel Hua Hin, Dusit Thani Hua Hin, Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa and Avani Hua Hin. SO/ Sofitel’s Beach Lawn holds up to 200 guests, its Event Lawn up to 450, and its pillarless SO/Khiri marquee up to 600, with a dedicated Indian chef on staff.
Phuket: JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa (Mai Khao Beach, room for a beachfront mandap), Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort and Angsana Laguna Phuket.
Bangkok: Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort and Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park. These are ballroom venues rather than beach venues. They suit a river or skyline backdrop and a large guest list.
Krabi: Banyan Tree Krabi and Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. Limestone-cliff scenery and a smaller-scale market than Phuket. Best for couples who put atmosphere ahead of guest count.
Pattaya and Koh Samui: we have no named venue partner yet in either, so we haven’t invented one here. Pattaya suits guests who want easy access from Bangkok’s airports. Samui runs on its own seasonal calendar and suits smaller, more private groups.
Is a wedding in Thailand legally recognised?
Most resort ceremonies in Thailand, including Indian ceremonies, are symbolic rather than legally binding under Thai law. Many couples register the marriage in India and treat Thailand as the ceremony and celebration.
Registering the marriage in Thailand itself is possible but separate. It runs through the Indian Embassy in Bangkok and the local Thai district office, with document translation and legalisation. Start well before travel and confirm the requirements directly with the embassy.
Can you add a Thai ceremony to your Indian wedding?
Some couples add a short, optional Thai blessing, usually monk-led and sometimes paired with a Rod Nam Sang water-pouring ritual, alongside their own rituals. It’s entirely optional.
